Darling River Eco Corridor 2

Project Information:

Darling River Eco Corridor 2 is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located at Mooleyarrah Station, approximately 150km northwest of Bourke in NSW. It was registered in June 2016 and covers 24,637.57ha.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve changing agricultural and land management practices to allow native forests to regenerate from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. These projects must meet standard methodology requirements by eventually reaching a forest cover of at least 20% crown cover and trees of at least 2 meters in height.

The Bourke area is a pastoral zone well known for extensive sheep and cattle grazing operations. The area is considered semi-arid with low rainfall, averaging around 340mm annually, and soils in the region are generally red sandy loams and heavy clays.

This project was set up to integrate with the landholders' organic grazing operation, providing a secondary carbon income that provides financial security during drought seasons. This allows the farmers to proactively destock and reduce grazing pressure on the land without losing their livelihood. The primary project activities include managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing, as well as the humane management of feral animals, to allow land where regrowth was suppressed for at least 10 years to successfully regenerate.
