Mountain Valley Station

Mountain Valley Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located approximately 150km east of Katherine in the Northern Territory, near the southern border of Arnhem Land. Registered in January 2016, the project encompasses a vast pastoral lease of approximately 141,059 hectares. The region is primarily utilised for cattle grazing, operating as a working cattle station that integrates carbon farming into its broader agricultural management.

The project operates under the Savanna Fire Management methodology, which generates carbon credits by altering the timing and intensity of fire regimes. By conducting strategic, controlled burns during the early dry season (typically cool burns), the project aims to reduce the fuel load and prevent the occurrence of large, high-intensity wildfires during the late dry season. This shift significantly reduces emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, powerful greenhouse gases released by hot fires.

Environmentally, Mountain Valley Station is situated in a tropical savanna climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The area receives significant annual rainfall, averaging around 1,000mm, with the majority falling between November and April. The landscape is described as upland savanna grazing country featuring sparse woodland, with soils predominantly consisting of sandy red, brown, and black earth types typical of the Roper Gulf region.

A notable development for this project occurred in late 2023 when the participant name changed from Country Carbon Pty Ltd to Duxton Farms Ltd. Duxton Farms, an ASX-listed agricultural enterprise, acquired the lease for Mountain Valley Station to diversify its portfolio into Northern Territory cattle and potentially cotton production. This acquisition marked a transition in management, bringing the existing carbon project under the umbrella of a major corporate agricultural operator.
