Mountain Valley Station

Mountain Valley Station is a Savanna Fire Management project located approximately 150 to 200 kilometres east of Katherine, and roughly 540 kilometres southeast of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It was registered in January 2016 and covers an expansive 141,059.62 hectares of upland savanna grazing country.

Savanna fire management projects involve the strategic and planned burning of savanna areas during the cooler, earlier part of the dry season. This early intervention reduces the fuel load on the ground, which in turn mitigates the risk and intensity of devastating late dry season wildfires, ultimately reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Katherine region is part of the tropical wet-dry savannas and is defined by a distinct monsoonal climate. The area receives about a metre (approx. 40 inches) of rain during the wet season, placing it within both high and low rainfall savanna zones. The landscape is a mix of open grassy plains, sparse woodlands, rocky escarpments, and meandering creek lines, with soils typically consisting of sandy red, brown, and black varieties that are well-suited for extensive cattle grazing operations.

Mountain Valley Station has seen significant shifts in corporate strategy over the years. Originally managed by Country Carbon Pty Ltd, who entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Clean Energy Regulator in 2020, the project proponent was officially varied to ASX-listed Duxton Farms Ltd in November 2023. Duxton Farms originally took on a five-year lease of the property with aspirations of developing large-scale broadacre cropping alongside the existing cattle operations. However, corporate reports from mid-2026 indicate that the company found this cropping strategy unfeasible within their required timeframes. As a result, Duxton Farms announced preparations to end its lease of Mountain Valley Station and sell off the majority of the station's cattle.
