Mountain Valley Station

Mountain Valley Station is a savanna fire management project located in the Top End of the Northern Territory, on the southern border of Arnhem Land, approximately 150km east of Katherine. It was registered in January 2016 and covers an area of 141,059.62 hectares. The region is predominantly used for beef cattle grazing, though recent developments have seen the project proponent explore broadacre cropping and cotton farming in the area.

Savanna fire management projects involve the strategic and planned burning of savanna woodland areas during the early dry season. By introducing mild, controlled fires early in the year, this methodology reduces ground fuel loads and mitigates the risk of highly destructive, intense wildfires in the late dry season. This abatement activity ultimately prevents significant greenhouse gas emissions, such as methane and nitrous oxide, from entering the atmosphere.

The environmental conditions in this region feature a warm and humid tropical climate characterised by distinct wet and dry seasons. The area is classified within a high rainfall zone, receiving an average of about a metre of rain annually, the vast majority of which falls between November and April. The station's landscape consists of sparse upland savanna woodland, and its soils are typically sandy red, brown, and black.

In 2023, ASX-listed agribusiness Duxton Farms signed a lease to operate the station, resulting in a participant name variation on the project from Country Carbon Pty Ltd to Duxton Farms Ltd in November of that year. Interestingly, public registry data notes that an Enforceable Undertaking was previously accepted by the Clean Energy Regulator from the former participant, Country Carbon, in May 2020. Since leasing the property, Duxton Farms has integrated Mountain Valley Station as a keystone asset in its broader strategy to expand agricultural operations across Northern Australia.
