Brou Landfill Gas Capture and Combustion Project

The Brou Landfill Gas Capture and Combustion Project is a waste management project located at the Brou Waste Management Facility, approximately 5km north of the coastal town of Dalmeny and 7km east of Bodalla in New South Wales. Registered in April 2016, the project operates within the Eurobodalla Shire, a region characterized by its coastal environment, forestry operations, and dairy farming, particularly famous in the nearby Bodalla area. The project area sits on the NSW South Coast, where the climate is temperate with warm summers and cool winters, and soils are typically derived from sedimentary rocks, consisting of skeletal grey loams and gravelly clays.

Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015, the project involves the installation of a new landfill gas collection system designed to capture methane generated from the decomposition of both legacy and non-legacy waste. Instead of venting this potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, the system captures it and combusts it using a flare, identified in reports as an LGI 250e biogas flare, converting the methane into carbon dioxide and water. This process significantly reduces the global warming potential of the emissions.

The project is a collaboration between the Eurobodalla Shire Council and Mike Ritchie and Associates Pty Ltd, with operational support from technology partner LGI. As of late 2023, the project had issued nearly 20,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The initiative plays a key role in the Council’s broader Climate Action Plan, which aims for Net Zero emissions by 2040, and generates revenue that helps offset the costs of waste management operations. In September 2023, the project’s methodology was varied to the 2021 compilation to align with updated regulatory standards.
