Intermodal Emissions Reduction Project

Project Information:

Intermodal Emissions Reduction Project is an aggregated transport project managed by Corporate Carbon Solutions that operates across multiple locations throughout Australia, rather than being tied to a single geographic site. Registered in October 2015, the project aggregates emissions reductions from various transport fleets, encompassing road, rail, and marine operations. Because the project focuses on mobile sources, specifically a "group of vehicles", it does not have a fixed project area, soil type, or rainfall classification typical of land-based carbon farming.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology awards carbon credits (ACCUs) to proponents who reduce the emissions intensity of their transport services. This is achieved by calculating the difference between actual emissions and a baseline of what emissions would have been without the intervention, normalized by the service provided (e.g., tonne-kilometers).

Project activities include replacing older vehicles with more efficient models, modifying existing fleets (such as improving aerodynamics or engine efficiency), and switching energy sources. Specific examples from this project include transitioning diesel-powered ships to Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), switching trucks to biodiesel, and optimizing the acceleration and braking performance of postal delivery vans and waste management vehicles. By aggregating these diverse transport activities, the project enables various operators, from logistics companies to waste services, to generate credits collectively where they might not have the scale to do so individually.
