Nemeena Avoided Deforestation Project

Project Information:
Nemeena Avoided Deforestation Project is an Avoided Deforestation project located approximately 80km south of Brewarrina in the Brewarrina local government area of New South Wales. It was registered in October 2015 and covers 18,974.02 hectares.
Avoided deforestation projects involve protecting native forest from being deforested or cleared and preventing the land from being converted to an agricultural system. Standard requirements for this methodology (Carbon Farming Initiative-Avoided Deforestation 1.1) dictate that the property must have had a valid land clearing permit issued prior to 1 July 2010. By surrendering this right to clear, the native forest is protected and avoids emissions that would have otherwise occurred.
The Brewarrina region is primarily known for extensive pastoral operations, including sheep and cattle grazing, alongside some dryland cropping. The environment is considered semi-arid with low and highly variable rainfall. The local soils are generally characterised by red earths, sandy loams, and grey clay plains.
This project was established to protect the native woodlands on the property from historical land clearing intentions. In November 2016, the project successfully secured a fixed delivery carbon abatement contract (CAC747685) with the Australian Government, committing 433,333 tonnes of abatement over a 10-year delivery period. As of recent registry data, over 225,000 tonnes of this contracted volume have already been delivered. In December 2021, the participant name was formally updated from individual operators Steven and Helen Bentick to Bentick Investments Pty Ltd.
