Jawoyn Fire 2
ERF102021
Project Information:
Jawoyn Fire 2 is a savanna fire management project located approximately 65km east-north-east of Katherine in the Northern Territory. It was registered in October 2015 and covers 585,245.54 ha.
Savanna fire management projects involve strategic and planned burning of savanna areas during the early dry season to reduce the risk, scale, and intensity of late dry season wildfires. By shifting the fire pattern, the project effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to the unmanaged baseline.
The Katherine region is known for Aboriginal land management, conservation, and tourism, notably encompassing portions of Nitmiluk National Park. The area is classified as a high rainfall savanna zone, and the soils generally consist of sandy loams and sandstone outcroppings typical of the Arnhem Land plateau.
A unique aspect of this project is its inclusion of Nitmiluk National Park, marking the first time a national park in the Northern Territory was included in a savanna burning project, representing a triumph for joint management. Additionally, the carbon credits produced have been used by local businesses, such as Train Safe NT, to provide carbon-neutral 4WD training courses. The project previously held a Commonwealth contract (CAC948203) which was successfully completed in August 2023.
