National Carbon Bank Lighting Projects 2016

Project Information:

National Carbon Bank Lighting Projects 2016 is an aggregated energy efficiency project managed by the National Carbon Bank of Australia Pty Ltd. Registered in October 2015, the project operates across various undisclosed locations, categorised broadly as "serviced areas." Unlike land-based carbon projects tied to a specific property, this project functions as an aggregator, bundling multiple lighting upgrades from different commercial, industrial, or public sites into a single carbon abatement activity.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Commercial and Public Lighting) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the reduction in electricity consumption achieved by replacing inefficient legacy lighting, such as halogen, mercury vapour, or metal halide lamps, with energy-efficient LED alternatives (specifically 240V LED lamps and luminaires). The abatement is calculated by comparing the new energy usage against the baseline energy consumption of the old equipment.

Because the project activities occur within the built environment, spanning warehouses, office buildings, roads, or public spaces, traditional environmental metrics like rainfall and soil type are not applicable. The "land use" for this project encompasses commercial and industrial infrastructure rather than agricultural or forestry zones. The project focuses on the modification and supplementation of lighting systems to lower Scope 2 emissions associated with electricity generation.

The project has successfully completed its contract (CAC541898) with the Australian Government, which was originally secured in April 2017. The National Carbon Bank of Australia is a significant participant in energy efficiency markets, also operating heavily within the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) as an Accredited Certificate Provider.
