Kimbriki Resource Recovery Project - MSW line (Revoked)

Project Information:
Kimbriki Resource Recovery Project - MSW line (Revoked) was a waste diversion project located at the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre in Ingleside, approximately 25km north of the Sydney CBD. Registered in October 2015, the project proposed the construction of a new Alternative Waste Treatment (AWT) facility within the existing waste precinct. The site sits in a bushland setting adjacent to Garigal National Park and is characterized by the high rainfall typical of the Sydney Basin, with sandy loam soils derived from the underlying Hawkesbury Sandstone.
The project operated under the Alternative Waste Treatment methodology, which awards carbon credits for diverting mixed solid waste (general "red bin" garbage) away from landfill. By processing this waste through enclosed composting or similar technologies, the project aimed to prevent the anaerobic decay of organic matter, thereby avoiding the release of methane. However, the project was revoked in June 2020, and its carbon abatement contract was terminated.
This revocation occurred during a turbulent period for the waste industry in New South Wales, following the EPA's 2018 decision to stop the use of Mixed Waste Organic Outputs (MWOO) on agricultural land. While Kimbriki Environmental Enterprises, owned by the Northern Beaches and Mosman Councils, continues to operate a large-scale recovery center for vegetation and construction waste, the specific "MSW line" AWT facility intended for this carbon project appears not to have proceeded to the crediting stage.
