Marsden Park Landfill Gas Capture and Combustion Project (Revoked)
ERF101986
Project Information:
The Marsden Park Landfill Gas Capture and Combustion Project (Revoked) was a landfill gas project located in Marsden Park, New South Wales, approximately 50 kilometers northwest of the Sydney CBD. The project was situated at the Blacktown Waste Services landfill on Richmond Road, a site that historically operated as a quarry for basalt, clay, and shale before becoming a waste management facility. The surrounding region of Marsden Park has transitioned from semi-rural market gardens and grazing land to a rapidly developing industrial and commercial precinct, known as the Sydney Business Park.
Registered in September 2015, the project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the destruction of methane generated by decomposing organic waste. Landfill gas systems extract this methane, a potent greenhouse gas, through a network of wells and pipes, subsequently combusting it via a flare or generator to convert it into less harmful carbon dioxide.
The project was revoked on October 16, 2018, under section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015. This section specifically governs "voluntary revocation... where no units have been issued," indicating that the proponent, Blacktown Waste Services, voluntarily cancelled the project registration before generating any carbon credits. This administrative action appears to have been a strategic reset, as a nearly identical project (Marsden Park LFG Emission Avoidance Project - ERF127488) was registered by the same proponent at the same location just one month later in November 2018. The site is characterized by clay and shale soils typical of the Cumberland Plain, with a temperate climate receiving moderate annual rainfall of approximately 700-900mm.
