Project Information:
DAC-2015-17 is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located in the Murweh local government area in South-West Queensland, approximately 125km south-east of Charleville. It was registered in September 2015 and covers an expansive 8,906.35 hectares.
Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) projects involve ceasing clearing activities, such as mechanical or chemical destruction, to allow native vegetation to regenerate naturally. The standard requirement for these projects is to allow the regenerating trees to reach forest cover, typically defined by achieving at least 20% crown cover and a height of 2 metres.
The Murweh Shire and surrounding South-West Queensland region are well known for extensive grazing and pastoral use, particularly for beef cattle and sheep. The environment is classified as semi-arid with low, variable rainfall. Soils in this Mulga Lands bioregion are generally composed of red earths, sandy loams, and clays.
This project was established to restore permanent native forests from in-situ seed sources (including rootstock and lignotubers) on land that had previously been subjected to at least one comprehensive clearing for pastoral use. The project’s proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd, was originally founded to provide a model that integrates carbon farming with active grazing. Interestingly, in July 2021, Australia's largest environmental markets investor, GreenCollar, acquired Devine Agribusiness Carbon to ensure projects like this continue to reward producers for sustainable land stewardship while maintaining agricultural productivity.
