Warrego Carbon Project

Project Information:

Warrego Carbon Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located approximately 20km northeast of the small town of Wyandra in southern Queensland. Registered in October 2015, the project covers a substantial area of 16,364 hectares within the Paroo Shire. The project area sits within the Mulga Lands bioregion, a semi-arid landscape characterized by red earth soils, sandy loams, and vegetation dominated by mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands.

The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology, which involves regenerating permanent native forests on land where vegetation had previously been cleared or suppressed for at least 10 years. Instead of planting new trees, the project focuses on assisting natural regeneration from in-situ seed sources (such as rootstock and lignotubers). This is achieved primarily by managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing and ceasing mechanical clearing, allowing the native forest to re-establish itself.

The region is traditionally used for sheep and cattle grazing, and this project integrates carbon farming with these existing pastoral activities. Notably, the project has historically supplied Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to major corporate entities; for instance, investment house Washington H. Soul Pattinson reported using credits from the Warrego Carbon Project to offset its Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2022 and 2023. While originally listed with Corporate Carbon Solutions as a participant, the project is now supported by the carbon farming service provider Climate Friendly.
