Mindarra Bioenergy Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Mindarra Bioenergy Project (Revoked) was a methane destruction project located at the Mindarra Piggery in the locality of Boonanarring, approximately 20km west of Gingin and 85km north of Perth, Western Australia. Registered in September 2015 by Quantum Power Limited, the project was situated on the largest pig farming operation in Western Australia, owned by Westpork. The surrounding region of the Shire of Gingin is a significant agricultural hub, characterized by intensive livestock production, horticulture, and broadacre grazing.

The project operated under the 'Destruction of Methane Generated from Manure in Piggeries' methodology. Standard requirements for this project type involve installing engineered covers over anaerobic manure lagoons to capture biogas that is naturally produced during waste decomposition. This captured gas, primarily methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is then combusted (flared) or used to generate electricity, converting the methane into less harmful carbon dioxide.

Environmentally, the Mindarra region experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The area lies on the transition between the Swan Coastal Plain and the Darling Scarp, typically featuring sandy soils (such as Bassendean sands) and areas of productive Gingin loam.

The project was revoked in May 2017 after its carbon abatement contract lapsed. Corporate reports from the period indicate that the project faced significant delays and cost escalations regarding connection to the local electricity network, which likely rendered the original biogas generation plan unviable. Westpork subsequently pursued alternative renewable energy solutions for the site, installing solar and wind infrastructure with a different partner in later years.
