Mindarra Bioenergy Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Mindarra Bioenergy Project (Revoked) was a methane destruction project located at the Mindarra Farm Piggery in Boonanarring, approximately 25km northeast of Gingin in Western Australia. The project was registered in September 2015 and covered the operations of Western Australia's largest piggery. It was revoked in May 2017 following the termination of its Carbon Abatement Contract.

The project operated under the "Destruction of Methane Generated from Manure in Piggeries" methodology. This involves installing covers over anaerobic lagoons to capture biogas (primarily methane) released during the decomposition of manure. The captured gas is then combusted, typically flared or used to generate electricity, converting the methane into carbon dioxide, which has a lower global warming potential.

The Boonanarring and Gingin region is an agricultural hub characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The area features sandy loam and gravelly soils typical of the Dandaragan Plateau and Swan Coastal Plain. While the surrounding landscape supports broadacre cropping and grazing, the project site itself is an intensive animal production facility.

The project proponent, Quantum Power Limited, secured a contract (CAC102030) in November 2015 to deliver 140,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). However, corporate reports from the period indicate the project faced significant challenges regarding electricity grid connection, with estimated costs for network connection reaching up to $1 million. These hurdles likely contributed to the project's inability to proceed, leading to the contract's lapse and the subsequent voluntary revocation of the project under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011.
