Janina Regeneration Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Janina Regeneration Project (Revoked) was a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at "Janina Station," approximately 115km west of Bourke in the remote Orana region of New South Wales. Registered in November 2015, the project covered a substantial area of 24,209 hectares. The site is situated within the Mulga Lands bioregion, an area characterized by semi-arid conditions, low rainfall, and extensive red earth and sandy loam soils typically supporting Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Bimble Box woodlands.

The project operated under the Carbon Farming Initiative using the HIR methodology, which credits carbon stored by regenerating native forests. The primary activity involved ceasing mechanical clearing and managing grazing pressure, likely by excluding livestock or controlling their timing, to allow suppressed native vegetation to regenerate into permanent forest. To qualify, the land must have been free of forest cover for at least 10 years prior due to suppression activities.

Notably, the project was voluntarily revoked under Section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011 on November 7, 2016, less than a year after registration. Prior to this revocation, the project proponent was transferred from the landholder's trust (Janina Laidley Pty Ltd) to a carbon service provider, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, in July 2016. The short duration and voluntary revocation suggest a strategic change in land management or an assessment that the project did not meet the specific viability or compliance requirements of the time.
