Woodside Pluto Carbon Offset Project - Stage 4

Project Information:

Woodside Pluto Carbon Offset Project - Stage 4 is a permanent mallee planting project located at the Carnamah and Dandaragan local government areas, approximately 307km north of Perth in Western Australia. It was registered in August 2015 and covers 1024.64 hectares.

Reforestation by environmental or mallee plantings projects involve establishing permanent plantings of native tree or mallee species on land that was previously cleared for agricultural use. The Carbon Farming Initiative methodology used by this project requires plantings to be established at sufficient stocking densities to achieve permanent mallee forms, with carbon sequestration estimated using the FullCAM modeling tool.

The Carnamah and Dandaragan region is historically known for broadacre agriculture, particularly wheat farming, cropping, and livestock grazing. The area experiences a hot semi-arid climate with low annual rainfall, typically averaging around 376mm. Soils in this region generally consist of red-brown or rocky loams, and sandy clays, which are highly suitable for deep-rooted native tree growth.

This project specifically establishes permanent plantings of Eucalyptus loxophleba, commonly known as York Gum, which is an endemic mallee species heavily adapted to these local semi-arid conditions. Operated by CO2 Australia as an agent, the site forms part of Woodside Burrup Pty. Ltd.'s broader Pluto Carbon Offset Project portfolio. These offsets help Woodside address operational greenhouse gas emissions associated with their LNG activities on the Burrup Peninsula. Originally registered under an older afforestation determination, the project varied its method in August 2024. Notably, the nearby town of Carnamah is renowned for its agricultural heritage and currently features a 5:1 scale replica of a Chamberlain 40K, giving it the record for the world's largest tractor sculpture.
