Reedy Creek Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

The Reedy Creek Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas operation located at the Reedy Creek Waste and Recycling Centre, approximately 8km west of Burleigh Heads in the Gold Coast region of Queensland. Registered on June 4, 2015, the project is operated by LMS Energy Pty Ltd. The facility sits within a peri-urban zone where land use is primarily waste management and industrial services, surrounded by the residential suburbs and remnant bushland of the Gold Coast hinterland.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards the capture and combustion of methane, a potent greenhouse gas generated by decomposing legacy and non-legacy waste. By upgrading the existing gas collection infrastructure, the project ensures methane is not released into the atmosphere but is instead used to power generators, creating renewable electricity and displacing fossil-fuel energy from the grid.

Environmentally, the Reedy Creek area is characterized by a subtropical climate with high rainfall, often exceeding 1,000mm annually. The local geology typically consists of the Neranleigh-Fernvale beds, producing soils that are generally sedimentary-derived clays and loams with low permeability.

A key feature of this project is its partnership between LMS Energy and the City of Gold Coast. The project underwent a variation in February 2022 to transition to the 2021 methodology, ensuring continued compliance and crediting for its abatement activities.
