Biodiverse Carbon Conservation
EOP101147
Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon Conservation is an environmental planting project located approximately 15km southwest of Jerramungup in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was registered in April 2015 and covers an area of 771.58 ha.
Environmental planting projects involve establishing permanent plantings of a mix of native tree or mallee species. Under standard carbon farming methodologies, these native trees are typically planted at a density sufficient to reach at least 200 stems per hectare and a minimum of 20% crown cover to successfully achieve forest cover.
The Jerramungup region is predominantly known for broadacre agriculture, specifically cereal cropping and sheep grazing, on land that was heavily cleared following World War II. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with semi-arid to medium rainfall, generally between 400mm and 600mm annually. Soils in this region are mostly sandy or loamy duplex soils over clay, which can be highly susceptible to salinity and waterlogging.
This project establishes permanent plantings of a mix of native tree species on land that was predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years prior to project commencement. It is particularly significant as it contributes to the broader Gondwana Link initiative, which aims to reconnect historically over-cleared and fragmented landscapes between the biologically diverse Fitzgerald River and Stirling Range National Parks. By creating vital ecological pathways, the plantings help protect threatened fauna such as the Black Gloved Wallaby. The project is managed by Canopy Nature Based Solutions Pty Ltd, and its Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) are actively used by Australian corporations to meet climate-active carbon neutral certifications.
