Hervey Bay Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

Hervey Bay Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas capture project located at the Hervey Bay Waste Management Facility in Nikenbah, approximately 10km south-west of the main Hervey Bay township in Queensland. The project was registered in March 2015 and operates on the site of a regional landfill managed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The project operates under the Landfill Gas methodology, which involves installing a system of wells and pipes to extract methane generated by decomposing organic waste. This captured gas is then combusted, in this specific case, via a flare, to convert potent methane into carbon dioxide, significantly reducing its global warming potential. LGI Limited, the project proponent, notes that this is a "small, regional landfill" where the revenue from Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) makes the abatement activity commercially viable. Unlike some of LGI's larger sites that generate electricity, the Hervey Bay project focuses primarily on flaring for carbon abatement.

The Fraser Coast region is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with significant rainfall, averaging roughly 1,000mm per year, and warm, humid summers. The surrounding landscape has historically supported sugar cane farming and grazing, with soil types in the area generally consisting of coastal sandy loams and clays. The project successfully completed its Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC102350) with the Australian Government in June 2023, delivering over 100,000 tonnes of abatement.
