Dorunda Station (Revoked)

Project Information:
Dorunda Station (Revoked) was a Savanna Fire Management project located at Dorunda Station, approximately 160km north-east of Normanton and north of the Gilbert River in the Gulf Country region of Queensland. Registered in July 2015, the project covered a significant area of 98,926 hectares. The project was revoked in January 2017 under section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which typically indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent.
The project area operates as a large-scale cattle station, part of the Gulf Coast Agricultural Co. portfolio, which raises Brahman cattle. The region is characterized by a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Rainfall is classified as high during the wet season (December to March), often isolating the property due to flooding. The landscape features vast floodplains, swamps, and wetlands, suggesting soil types dominated by alluvial clays and sandy loams typical of the Gulf Plains.
This project utilized the "Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Early Dry Season Savanna Burning" methodology. This method involves strategically igniting cool, patchy fires in the early dry season to reduce the fuel load. This practice aims to prevent large, high-intensity uncontrolled wildfires in the late dry season, thereby avoiding the higher levels of methane and nitrous oxide emissions associated with those hotter fires.
An interesting historical note is that Dorunda Station was established in 1885 and named after the SS Dorunda, the first vessel to transport beef from Queensland to Great Britain. The property is also known for a 20km-long permanent freshwater lake. The proponent, Country Carbon Pty. Ltd., later entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with the Clean Energy Regulator in 2020 regarding other matters, distinct from this project's earlier revocation.
