Wallal Carbon Farming Project 2

Project Information:

Wallal Carbon Farming Project 2 is a native forest regeneration project located at "Wallal Station," approximately 30 kilometers south of Charleville in South West Queensland. Registered in December 2014, the project operates on a 2,062-hectare area within the Murweh Shire. The region is historically significant for pastoral activities, specifically cattle and sheep grazing, with the Wallal property itself positioned along the Mitchell Highway and recognized as a prime pastoral holding in the Warrego district.

The project operates under the Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) methodology. This specific framework credits landholders for allowing native vegetation to regenerate on land that was previously cleared for pastoral use. Unlike tree planting projects, this method relies on the cessation of mechanical or chemical clearing to allow existing rootstock, lignotubers, and seeds to regrow into a permanent native forest. The project proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon, manages the land to ensure regrowth is not suppressed, facilitating the return of the natural ecosystem.

Environmentally, the Charleville region is classified as semi-arid, characterized by hot summers and mild winters with variable rainfall. The local landscape, often described as "Mulga country," typically features soft red earth soils and sandy loams that support Acacia woodlands (Mulga) and native grasses. The project area likely includes river country and Mulga lands, which are highly responsive to managed regeneration when grazing pressure is controlled and clearing is halted.
