Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project

Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project is an electricity generation from landfill gas project located at Marsden Park, approximately 50km northwest of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. It was registered in November 2012. The exact project area size is unknown, but it operates over the extent of the former Grange Avenue landfill site.

Electricity generation from landfill gas projects involve capturing methane emitted by decomposing organic waste and combusting it in an engine or turbine to generate electricity. This continuous operation prevents methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere, while simultaneously supplying renewable energy back to the grid. The project captures gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste.

The Marsden Park area was historically known for rural land uses such as grazing and poultry farming, alongside industrial activities like quarrying and landfills. Today, the region is undergoing a significant transition into dense residential developments and large-scale commercial warehousing (such as the nearby major distribution centres). The region experiences a humid subtropical climate with moderate annual rainfall. Soils in this part of the Cumberland Plain are typically shale-derived clays and chromosols.

This project transitioned from a revoked Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) method to the 2015 methodology, before moving again in February 2022 to the current 2021 Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas methodology. It is operated by EDL LFG (NSW) Pty Ltd, which runs a power station on-site with a generation capacity of approximately 1.25 MW. The project was contracted by the Commonwealth in April 2015, and its contract (CAC403360) was successfully completed in September 2022. Interestingly, as the surrounding Marsden Park precinct continues to urbanize, the closed landfill site is slated for eventual conversion into sporting facilities to support the rapidly growing local community.
