Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project
EOP100629
Project Information:
The Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project is a waste-to-energy initiative located at the closed Grange Avenue Waste Management Centre in Marsden Park, approximately 45km northwest of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. Registered in November 2012, the project is operated by EDL LFG (NSW) Pty Ltd and functions under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021.
Projects of this type involve the active capture of methane-rich gas generated by decomposing organic matter within a landfill. Instead of allowing this potent greenhouse gas to vent into the atmosphere, the project extracts it through a network of vertical wells and pipes. The gas is then combusted in a dedicated 1.25 MW power station on-site to generate electricity, which is fed into the local grid. This dual-benefit process mitigates climate impact by destroying methane and displacing fossil-fuel-based electricity generation.
The Marsden Park region lies within the Cumberland Plain of Western Sydney. While the specific site is a former waste disposal facility, the broader surrounding area has historically been used for grazing and market gardens but is currently undergoing rapid transformation into a major residential urban growth corridor. The local environment is characterized by moderate rainfall, averaging roughly 700–800mm annually, and features heavy clay soils derived from Wianamatta Shale, which are typical of the Sydney Basin.
An interesting aspect of this project is its longevity and adaptability; it has transitioned through multiple iterations of the carbon farming methodology (2012, 2015, and 2021) while maintaining operations. Although the landfill itself is closed and no longer accepting waste, it continues to produce gas from legacy waste. The project has successfully fulfilled a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC403360) with the Australian Government and operates under NSW Environment Protection Licence 13337.
