Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:
Grange Avenue Landfill Gas Project is a waste sector project located at the Grange Avenue Waste Management Centre in Marsden Park, approximately 45km northwest of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales. Registered in November 2012, the project operates on a closed landfill site situated within the rapidly developing North West Growth Centre. While the surrounding region was historically characterized by market gardens, poultry farming, and grazing, it is now undergoing significant transformation into residential and industrial estates.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology involves the installation and operation of a system to capture methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during the decomposition of organic waste, and combust it within internal combustion engines to generate renewable electricity. By converting methane into carbon dioxide and useful energy, the project mitigates the environmental impact of the landfill while feeding power into the local grid.
The Marsden Park area generally experiences a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging around 700mm to 800mm annually. The local geology is typical of the Cumberland Plain, featuring clay and shale soils; notably, the landfill site itself was originally a quarry used for extracting basalt, clay, and shale before being repurposed for waste management.
An interesting feature of this project is its longevity and adaptability; it has successfully transitioned through multiple regulatory frameworks, moving from the original Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) methods to the current Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) standards. Operated by EDL (Energy Developments Limited), the facility has an installed generation capacity of approximately 1.25 MW. As of late 2025, the project has generated over 196,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and has completed its initial carbon abatement contract.
