Stapylton Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

The Stapylton Landfill Gas Project is a waste sector project located at the Stapylton Recycling and Landfill Centre, approximately 38km southeast of Brisbane and 40km north of the Gold Coast in Queensland. Registered on July 21, 2014, the project operates within the Stapylton locality, a mixed-use region characterized by heavy industry, quarrying operations, and waste management facilities, bordered by sugarcane fields and the Albert River.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. The methodology involves the capture of methane, a potent greenhouse gas released during the decomposition of organic waste in the landfill, and its combustion in a generator to produce renewable electricity. By converting methane into carbon dioxide (which has a lower global warming potential) and displacing fossil-fuel-generated electricity from the grid, the project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). The project activities include the continuing operation of a gas collection system that manages gas from both legacy (pre-2012) and non-legacy waste streams.

The region experiences a humid subtropical climate with significant summer rainfall, typically averaging between 800mm and 1200mm annually. The local terrain, often utilized for quarrying, features a mix of texture-contrast soils (Kurosols/Chromosols) and heavy clays (Vertosols) derived from the underlying metamorphic rock and alluvial deposits.

The project proponent, LMS Energy Pty Ltd, is a leading bioenergy company in Australia. Notably, this project has transitioned through several methodology iterations (2012, 2015, and 2021) to reflect evolving standards and has successfully completed a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC873169) with the Australian Government as of June 2022. The site sits adjacent to other waste recovery operations, highlighting Stapylton's role as a key waste management hub for the Gold Coast and Brisbane corridor.
