Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate

Project Information:
Carbon Estate - Creating a Better Climate is a permanent mallee planting project located on the Barooga Karrai property near Euabalong, approximately 60km west of Condobolin in NSW. It was registered in September 2013. While the exact project area is suppressed on the registry, the host Barooga Karrai property spans 10,626 hectares.
Environmental and mallee planting projects under the FullCAM methodology involve establishing permanent native forest cover to effectively sequester carbon from the atmosphere. This specific project establishes permanent mallee plantings of Eucalyptus polybractea (blue mallee), Eucalyptus loxophleba (York gum), and Eucalyptus kochii (oil mallee) trees on land that was previously used for agricultural purposes.
The Euabalong area in the Lachlan Shire is traditionally known for broadacre agriculture, particularly cereal cropping and livestock grazing. The region is semi-arid, experiencing relatively low average annual rainfall, and typically features semi-arid soil profiles such as red earths and sandy clay loams.
Interestingly, the Barooga Karrai property where this project is hosted is owned by the Murrin Bridge Local Aboriginal Land Council. The property was originally purchased in 1986 by the Wiradjuri Regional Aboriginal Land Council and was officially handed back to its rightful Traditional Owners in a 2016 ceremony. The project's proponent, Carbon Estate Pty Ltd, partnered with agent CO2 Australia to help manage and deliver this significant revegetation effort. Additionally, in November 2021, the project varied its methodology from an earlier reforestation determination to the current FullCAM Environmental and Mallee Plantings method.
