Icon Water Reforestation Project

Project Information:

Icon Water Reforestation Project is a reforestation and afforestation project located at Four Corners - Middle Road near Tullamore, approximately 85km north-west of Parkes in NSW. It was registered in July 2013. While the exact project area size has been partially suppressed from the public register, it operates within the Lachlan and Parkes local government areas.

Reforestation and afforestation projects involve establishing permanent plantings of trees on land that was previously cleared and used for agricultural purposes. To meet methodology requirements, these plantings must be managed to establish a permanent forest cover, which typically requires a planting density capable of achieving at least two metres in height and 20% crown cover.

The Tullamore region is predominantly known for broadacre cropping, as well as sheep and cattle grazing mixed farming operations. The area experiences a moderate to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 470 to 540mm. Soils in the region generally consist of red loam, red sandy soils, and hardsetting red-brown earths, often featuring ironstone and quartz ridges.

This project was established to create permanent plantings of Eucalyptus polybractea, commonly known as Blue Mallee trees. The project was originally registered under the name ACTEW Water Reforestation Project, but underwent a name variation in June 2016 to the Icon Water Reforestation Project, reflecting the corporate rebranding of the ACT's principal water utility. With CO2 Australia acting as the agent for Icon Water Ltd, the project has successfully generated over 71,000 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to date.
