Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility

Project Information:

The Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is a landfill gas project located at the Kelvin Road Landfill in Orange Grove, approximately 18km southeast of the Perth CBD in Western Australia. Originally registered in August 2013, the project operates within the City of Gosnells, a region characterised by a mix of residential, industrial, and semi-rural land uses. The site sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, where the environment typically features sandy to loamy soils (often of the Southern River or Guildford formations) and experiences a Mediterranean climate with distinct, wet winters and dry summers.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. Landfill gas projects of this type involve the installation of gas collection wells and piping systems to capture methane generated by the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste. Instead of venting this potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, the captured gas is combusted, often to generate renewable electricity. Historical data suggests the facility was originally commissioned by AGL Energy in 2004 with the capacity to power approximately 3,000 homes annually.

Over its operational life, the project has undergone significant administrative transitions. It migrated from the original Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) legacy waste method to the current Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) methodology. The project proponent has also changed hands, moving from AGL Energy Services to Sustainable Energy Infrastructure, and finally to LMS Energy Pty Ltd in 2022. LMS Energy is a leading bioenergy company in Australia, and the facility continues to abate emissions by capturing gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste streams.
