Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility

Project Information:

Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is a landfill gas project located at the Kelvin Road Landfill in Orange Grove, within the City of Gosnells, approximately 20km southeast of the Perth CBD in Western Australia. The project was registered in August 2013 and operates within a region historically utilized for waste management, light industry, and semi-rural residential purposes.

Landfill gas projects involve the installation of gas collection systems, comprising wells and pipes, into the waste mass to capture methane generated by decomposing organic matter. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015, this captured gas is combusted (flared or used to generate electricity), converting potent methane into carbon dioxide and water, thereby significantly reducing its global warming potential.

The Gosnells site is situated on the eastern edge of the Swan Coastal Plain, near the foothills of the Darling Scarp. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The local soil profile typically consists of sandy soils (Bassendean system) transitioning into the gravelly clays and loams of the Ridge Hill Shelf as the elevation rises toward the scarp.

Originally commissioned in 2004 by AGL Energy, the facility was one of Western Australia’s earlier landfill gas power stations, designed to generate enough electricity to power approximately 3,000 homes annually. The project has undergone significant administrative transitions, moving from AGL Energy Services to Sustainable Energy Infrastructure, and finally to LMS Energy in 2022. Notably, the project held a Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC197358) with the Australian Government, which has been successfully completed.
