Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility
EOP100249
Project Information:
Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is a landfill gas project located at the former City of Gosnells landfill site on Kelvin Road in Orange Grove, approximately 20km southeast of the Perth CBD in Western Australia. It was registered in August 2013 and covers an unknown area.
Landfill gas abatement projects involve installing a gas collection system to capture and combust methane generated by decomposing organic matter in a landfill. The standard requirements for this methodology involve calculating a baseline of emissions that would have occurred without the system, and safely combusting the captured gas either through flaring or electricity generation (co-generation) to ensure the verifiable abatement of greenhouse gases. This specific project transitioned from a revoked Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) method to the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative - Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015, capturing gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste.
The Orange Grove area sits near the foothills of the Darling Scarp and is characterised by a mix of light industrial use, commercial zones, and remnant semi-rural properties. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with a moderate-to-high annual rainfall classification of approximately 700–800mm. The local soils generally mark a transition from the sandy profiles of the Swan Coastal Plain to lateritic gravels and clays.
Since its registration, the project has undergone several participant changes, moving from AGL Energy Services Pty Limited to the Sustainable Energy Infrastructure Trust in 2019, and finally to LMS Energy Pty Ltd in 2022. Additionally, a fixed delivery carbon abatement contract (CAC197358) linked to this facility was awarded in April 2015 and officially completed in February 2023.
