Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility
EOP100249
Project Information:
Gosnells Landfill Gas Abatement Facility is a landfill gas project located in the City of Gosnells local government area, approximately 12km southeast of the Perth CBD in Western Australia. It was registered in August 2013 and the exact project area size is not publicly specified.
Landfill gas projects involve the installation of a gas collection system to capture and combust methane generated from decomposing organic waste in a landfill. Standard requirements dictate the use of flares or electricity generation systems to combust the captured methane, converting it into carbon dioxide to significantly reduce its global warming potential.
The region surrounding the project is largely urbanised, consisting of suburban residential neighbourhoods, industrial zones, and municipal waste management operations. The Perth area experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by moderate to high winter rainfall, and the soils typically consist of deep coastal sands (such as Bassendean sands) that transition into alluvial clays towards the nearby Darling Scarp foothills.
This project transitioned from a revoked early Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) method to the updated 2015 Landfill Gas methodology. It currently captures and combusts gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste at the site. Over its operational lifetime, the facility has seen several corporate participant variations, initially transitioning from AGL Energy Services Pty Limited to Sustainable Energy Infrastructure Trust in 2019, and finally to LMS Energy Pty Ltd in early 2022. Additionally, a 41,000-tonne Fixed Delivery Carbon Abatement Contract (CAC197358) associated with the project was successfully fulfilled and marked as completed in February 2023.
