Browns Plains Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

Browns Plains Landfill Gas Project is a waste management and energy generation project located at the Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility in Heritage Park, approximately 25km south of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland. Registered in April 2013, the project is situated within the Logan City local government area. The surrounding region is characterized by peri-urban residential development and industrial zones, transitioning from historical grazing and timber lands.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology incentivizes the capture of methane, a potent greenhouse gas produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste, and its combustion to generate electricity. By upgrading the gas collection system to process both legacy and non-legacy waste, the project converts methane into less harmful carbon dioxide and renewable energy, preventing it from venting into the atmosphere.

Environmentally, the Logan region experiences a subtropical climate with high, summer-dominant rainfall. While the project site itself utilizes engineered clay liners and gravel for waste containment, the natural soils in the broader area are typically texture-contrast soils and clays.

An interesting aspect of this project is its scale and integration; operated by EDL LFG (QLD) Pty Ltd, the facility has a generation capacity of approximately 2 megawatts (MW). According to local council data, this output is sufficient to power around 2,000 homes. The facility is often cited as one of Queensland's most advanced waste precincts, combining gas capture with extensive recycling and leachate management systems.
