Project Information:

Smeatonvale Carbon Project 2 is a Soil Organic Carbon project located at the Smeatonvale agricultural property, approximately 24km from the agricultural hub of Deniliquin in the Riverina region of New South Wales. It was registered in August 2026 and covers an area of 577.76 hectares.

The Carbon Credits (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology requires land managers to implement new or materially different management activities to build carbon stocks in the soil. For this project, the core activity is applying nutrients to the agricultural system using synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address a material soil deficiency. The methodology mandates rigorous baseline soil sampling, typically to a 1-metre depth across the project area, followed by subsequent physical sampling or modelling rounds to measure the carbon increase and generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

The Deniliquin area is widely known for its mixed farming operations, irrigated cropping, and livestock grazing, particularly sheep and cattle. The regional environment is classified as semi-arid, experiencing roughly 400mm to 420mm of average annual rainfall. The local soils typically consist of Red Chromosols (red-brown earths) and heavy cracking clays (Vertosols), which respond well to targeted nutrient applications and pasture improvement strategies.

Interestingly, the 850-hectare Smeatonvale holding sits on the Cobb Highway near the historic village of Wanganella, famously recognised as the 1860s birthplace of the Peppin Merino sheep breed, which now dominates the Australian wool industry. The carbon project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, Australia’s largest soil carbon project developer, which also operates a sister project, Smeatonvale Carbon Project 1, on the same property. Agriprove operates on a model where they absorb the complex monitoring, reporting, and verification requirements to reduce the administrative burden for the partnering farmer.
