Project Information:
Lenah2026R_Styx_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located in the Styx Valley of Tasmania, approximately 20km east of Maydena and 100km northwest of Hobart. Registered in June 2026, the project covers an area of 87.20 hectares.
Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation, or avoiding the conversion of plantation land to non-forested land. In this specific project, the proponent is avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land. By establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest dedicated to the commercial harvesting of wood products, the project ensures continuous carbon sequestration while maintaining a productive timber cycle. These projects require adherence to specific management actions, such as maintaining appropriate tree stocking densities and continuous management for commercial wood production.
The Styx Valley region, famously known as the 'Valley of the Giants', is characterised by a mix of protected old-growth native forests and commercial forestry operations. The valley is home to some of the world's tallest flowering plants, the Eucalyptus regnans (Swamp gum or Mountain Ash). The area experiences a cool, high-rainfall climate typical of central and western Tasmania, supporting dense vegetation and dark, tannin-stained rivers like the Styx River. Soils here are generally fertile forest loams and dolerite-derived podzols, highly suited to both towering native gums and commercial pine or eucalypt plantations.
Operated by Lenah Estate Pty Ltd with SFM Environmental Solutions acting as the project agent, this initiative aligns with their 'blended' forest management approach. SFM Environmental Solutions is a prominent independent Tasmanian forestry management company that promotes programs like ActivAcre. This approach helps landowners generate dual revenue streams from both carbon sequestration and sustainable timber harvesting, keeping the land forested rather than seeing it converted to alternative agricultural uses. Lenah Estate Pty Ltd is a known large-scale landholder in the region, managing tracts of both pine and eucalypt plantations.
