Hogans Pocket landfill gas project

Project Information:

Hogans Pocket landfill gas project is a landfill gas capture and flaring project located at the Hogan's Pocket Landfill in Eton, approximately 50km southwest of Mackay City in Queensland. It was registered in March 2026 and operates within a total landfill facility size of 275ha.

Reducing Methane Emissions from Landfill Gas projects involve capturing biogas (primarily methane) generated by decomposing organic waste in municipal landfills. In this flaring-only upgrade project, the collected biomethane is treated and destroyed through combustion in a flare, converting the potent methane into less potent carbon dioxide to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.

The Eton and wider Mackay area is well known for extensive sugarcane cropping and cattle grazing. The region has a high rainfall classification, typically receiving over 1,400mm annually, largely concentrated during a heavy tropical wet season. Soils in the surrounding area generally consist of texture-contrast Chromosols and fertile cracking clays (Vertosols).

The project proponent, LGI Limited, specializes in landfill biogas recovery and carbon abatement solutions. The Hogan's Pocket site, which handles up to 100,000 tonnes of municipal waste annually for the Mackay Regional Council, has previously won awards for excellence in landfill management. Due to the intense regional rainfall, the site also relies on significant stormwater and leachate pond infrastructure to protect the surrounding environment.
