Mudgee Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

Mudgee Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas project located at the Mudgee Solid Waste Facility, situated in the Central West region of New South Wales, approximately 260km northwest of Sydney. It was registered in May 2026 and operates within the footprint of the local landfill.

Projects utilizing the Reducing Methane Emissions from Landfill Gas methodology involve installing infrastructure to collect gas generated by anaerobically decomposing organic waste. This landfill gas, which consists of roughly 50% highly potent methane, is combusted via a flare to convert it into carbon dioxide, drastically reducing the site's overall greenhouse gas footprint. This particular project is classified as a new, flaring-only, non-biomethane initiative designed to capture gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste.

The surrounding Mudgee area is heavily utilized for viticulture, grazing, and cropping operations. The region experiences a sub-humid climate with moderate annual rainfall typically ranging from 600mm to 700mm. Local soils primarily consist of fertile red clay loams that actively support the wine industry, alongside alluvial sandy loams near the waterways.

Interestingly, this project was established following a public tender (RFT 2025/32) by the Mid-Western Regional Council in mid-2025. The council awarded a full-service contract to LGI Limited, an arrangement where LGI designs, builds, owns, and operates the gas capture and flaring system at no upfront or ongoing maintenance cost to the council. In exchange, the council receives a 25% share of the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated by the project, effectively turning an odour-management necessity into a revenue-sharing environmental asset.
