Lochiel Carbon Project 9
ERF206855
Project Information:
Lochiel Carbon Project 9 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the locality of Lochiel, approximately 130km north of Adelaide in South Australia. The project is situated in the Mid North region, an area well-regarded for its dryland cropping and grazing operations. Registered recently in January 2026, the project covers a total area of 512.22 hectares.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This method allows landholders to earn carbon credits by implementing new management activities that increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. For Lochiel Carbon Project 9, the specific activities involve addressing nutrient deficiencies through the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers and integrating legume species into cropping or pasture systems. These actions are designed to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn draws more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.
Environmentally, the Lochiel region is characterized by a Mediterranean to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 325mm to 375mm, predominantly falling in winter. The local landscape typically features red-brown earths and calcareous loamy soils, which are fertile but can be structurally fragile and low in organic carbon if over-cultivated. The project is part of a larger aggregation of soil carbon initiatives in the district managed by the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, as indicated by the sequential numbering of the project title.
