Thistlebank Soil Carbon Project
ERF205444
Project Information:
Thistlebank Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located at the Thistlebank property, 100km north of Aramac in the Barcaldine Regional Council area of central-west Queensland. It was registered in September 2025 and covers 5,702.40ha.
Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models projects involve undertaking new land management activities and verifying changes in soil carbon levels over time using direct measurement or a combination of measurement and modelling. For this specific project, the primary activity involves altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.
The Aramac region is well known for large-scale commercial beef cattle grazing. The area is considered semi-arid with highly variable rainfall, and local soils generally consist of Mitchell grass downs, featuring deep cracking clays and sandy loams.
This project was set up to sequester carbon in the agricultural system while complementing a highly successful commercial cattle operation. The proponents, Thistlebank Grazing, have won major commercial steer trials and actively participate in industry programs to implement advanced herd management techniques like strategic feed budgeting and new rotational grazing charts, which directly align with the carbon project's regenerative goals.
