Project Information:

Newrybar Wetland is an environmental planting project located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, situated approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Byron Bay and 10 kilometers north of Ballina. The project was registered in November 2025 and covers a project area of 17.85 hectares.

The Newrybar region is characterized by its lush, high-rainfall environment, often exceeding 1,600mm annually, which supports robust vegetation growth. The landscape typically features rich, red volcanic soils (Ferrosols), which are highly fertile and commonly used for horticulture, specifically macadamia nuts and coffee, as well as cattle grazing. This project, managed by proponent Ross Burgess, involves establishing and maintaining a permanent mixed-species planting.

Operating under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2024, the project focuses on sequestering carbon by restoring native forest cover. This methodology requires planting species local to the area at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically a minimum of 200 stems per hectare for block plantings), with carbon abatement calculated using the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM). The project aims to recreate the structure and composition of the local native vegetation community, likely contributing to biodiversity and water quality improvements in the wetland catchment.
