Project Information:

Penola Plantations 2026 – P26-2 Nangwarry Central is a plantation forestry project located approximately 5km north of the township of Nangwarry and 20km south of Penola in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Registered in August 2025, the project covers 183.49 hectares of dedicated forestry land. The project is situated within the Green Triangle, one of Australia's premier timber regions, known for its extensive Radiata Pine and Tasmanian Blue Gum estates that support a robust local timber processing industry.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it engages in "avoided conversion" activities, which generate carbon credits by preventing the conversion of an existing plantation forest into non-forested land, such as pasture for grazing or cropping. By committing to maintain the plantation for commercial harvesting rather than clearing it for agriculture, the project ensures the continued sequestration of carbon in the standing trees and harvested wood products.

The Nangwarry area is characterized by a high-rainfall climate, averaging over 700mm annually, which is ideal for commercial timber production. The local terrain consists of gently undulating plains featuring deep sandy soils, often overlying clay subsoils (Podosols and Chromosols). These well-drained, sandy profiles are well-suited to pine forestry but require careful management to maintain nutrient levels. The project is managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd, a major forestry manager in the region, on behalf of the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust. This initiative highlights the increasing value of carbon finance in incentivizing the retention of timber resources in areas where agricultural land conversion poses a competitive threat.
