Project Information:
ACP CBA 2025_2 is a plantation forestry project located in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania, approximately 15km north of Oatlands and near the small locality of Tunbridge. Registered in September 2025, the project covers 482.56 hectares of land in a region traditionally dominated by dryland grazing and cropping. The area sits within the Tasmanian Midlands, a dry sclerophyll environment that receives relatively low rainfall (around 500mm annually) compared to the rest of the state, with soils typically consisting of texture-contrast clays derived from dolerite.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically utilising the "avoided conversion" activity (Schedule 3). This methodology credits projects for maintaining an existing plantation forest that was at risk of being cleared and converted to non-forested land, such as pasture for livestock. By committing to continue the plantation cycle rather than clearing the land for agriculture, the project avoids the emissions associated with deforestation and continues to sequester carbon in the timber.
The proponent, Australian Carbon Products Pty Ltd, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Midway Limited (ASX: MWY), one of Australia's largest woodfibre processors and exporters. This project appears to be part of Midway's strategic transition towards "nature-based solutions," leveraging their existing forestry assets to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) alongside traditional timber products. The "ACP" in the project name likely serves as an acronym for the proponent, while the "Avoided Conversion" activity highlights the economic pressure in the region to convert forestry land back to grazing assets during periods of timber market volatility.
