Project Information:

Allot 21 Walkers Rock Carbon Project is an Environmental Planting project located near the coastal locality of Walkers Rock, approximately 15 kilometers north of Elliston on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Registered in July 2025, the project covers 77.66 hectares of land. The Walkers Rock area is situated adjacent to the Lake Newland Conservation Park, a region characterized by coastal dunes and saline lakes, while the broader inland district is heavily utilized for mixed agriculture, primarily cereal cropping (wheat and barley) and sheep grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2024. This methodology requires the establishment of permanent forest cover using species native to the local area. The project activities involve planting a mix of native trees and shrubs, likely Mallee eucalypts and associated understory species, at a density sufficient to achieve forest canopy cover. This approach not only sequesters carbon but also aims to restore local biodiversity, potentially creating a wildlife corridor connecting with the nearby Lake Newland Conservation Park.

Environmentally, the region experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and dry, warm summers. The average annual rainfall is approximately 400mm, which is the lower limit for many high-density forestry operations but well-suited to Mallee vegetation. The soils in this coastal stretch of the Eyre Peninsula are typically shallow, calcareous sands and limestone-based loams, which can be fragile and prone to erosion if cleared. By re-establishing permanent vegetation, the project helps stabilize these sandy soils and reduce wind erosion risk.
