Talia

Project Information:
Talia is a significant environmental planting project located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, situated approximately 40km north of the township of Elliston. Registered in June 2025, the project encompasses a large area of 2,058 hectares adjacent to the Kulliparu Conservation Park. The initiative creates a vital biodiversity corridor, linking fragmented habitats in a region heavily modified for agriculture.
The broader Eyre Peninsula region is predominantly characterized by cereal cropping (wheat and barley) and sheep grazing. Consequently, the local environment has faced historical clearing and degradation. The area experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 440mm. The soil profile is typical of the region, consisting largely of calcareous sands, limestone, and shallow sandy loams, which present specific challenges for vegetation establishment that the project addresses through specialized planting techniques.
Operating under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM (2024) methodology, the project involves establishing permanent native forest cover using a mix of species indigenous to the local area. A key focus of the Talia project is the restoration of the critically endangered Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata) Grassy Woodland. The methodology uses the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) to estimate the carbon sequestered by the growing trees, ensuring rigorous accounting of the climate benefits.
This project is notable for its strong focus on co-benefits beyond carbon sequestration. It is developed in partnership with Carbon2Nature (a subsidiary of Iberdrola) and engages deeply with the Wirangu and Nauo First Nations peoples, facilitating access to Country and integrating traditional ecological knowledge into land management. The site acts as a flagship for the 2024 methodology, utilizing advanced technology and climate-resilient seed stocks to ensure the longevity of the restored ecosystem.
