Pannell Carbon Project 12

Pannell Carbon Project 12 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, approximately 45km south of Loxton and 10km southeast of the small locality of Alawoona. Registered in May 2025, the project covers a land area of roughly 445 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly characterized by dryland cropping and grazing operations, typical of the broader Mallee landscape which extends across the South Australian and Victorian border.

The project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology. This method allows landholders to earn carbon credits by measuring increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from changes in land management. Specifically, this project involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By correcting these deficiencies, the project aims to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn increases the organic carbon input into the soil profile.

Environmentally, the site is situated in a semi-arid climate zone with low and variable rainfall. The nearby Loxton station records a long-term average annual rainfall of approximately 260mm to 280mm. The terrain likely consists of the dune-swale systems common to the Mallee, with soils that are typically sandy loams or calcareous sands. These soils are often naturally low in fertility and organic matter, making them responsive to the nutrient management activities proposed by the project, provided there is sufficient moisture.

This project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector known for aggregating projects to streamline participation for farmers.
