Pannell Carbon Project 8
ERF203189
Project Information:
Pannell Carbon Project 8 is a soil organic carbon sequestration project located approximately 45km south of the river town of Loxton, in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. The project was registered in May 2025 and covers a project area of 546.30 hectares. The site sits within a region traditionally defined by dryland farming, specifically grain cropping and grazing, which operates under the challenges of a semi-arid climate.
This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards landholders for increasing soil carbon stocks by changing land management activities. In this specific instance, the project involves the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material soil deficiencies. By improving nutrient availability, the project aims to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn increases the amount of organic carbon stored in the soil profile.
The environmental context of the Northern Murray Mallee is characterised by low annual rainfall, typically averaging between 250mm and 280mm. The landscape is dominated by dune-swale systems featuring calcareous sandy loams and deep sands. These sandy soils are naturally low in organic matter and prone to wind erosion, making them suitable candidates for carbon farming initiatives that improve soil structure and ground cover. The proponent, Agriprove Solutions Co No.2 Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of Agriprove, a major developer in the Australian soil carbon market known for managing large portfolios of similar aggregated projects.
