Pannell Carbon Project 6

Project Information:
Pannell Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, approximately 45 kilometers south of the township of Loxton. Registered in May 2025, the project covers a project area of 437.69 hectares. The site is situated within the District Council of Loxton Waikerie, a region predominantly known for dryland cropping (cereals like wheat and barley) and livestock grazing (sheep and cattle). The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Co No.2 Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Agriprove, which is a prominent developer of soil carbon projects in Australia.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology (2021). This method rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved land management practices. In this specific instance, the project activities focus on applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By correcting these deficiencies, the project aims to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn increases the input of carbon into the soil profile. The method uses a hybrid approach of physical soil sampling and modelling to calculate the number of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated over the project's crediting period.
Environmentally, the location is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 260mm. The landscape typically features dune-swale systems with soils that are predominantly calcareous sands and sandy loams (Calcarosols). These soils are naturally low in organic matter and often suffer from nutrient constraints, making them highly responsive to the fertiliser applications proposed by the project. The area is also subject to hot summers and mild winters, which influences the timing of nutrient application and pasture growth. Interestingly, public records identify Mike Pannell as a prominent grower in the Loxton area who has been recognized for productivity in farming, suggesting a strong likelihood of this project being part of his agricultural enterprise.
