Cultura Australia Plantation Project No. 2

ERF202828

Project Information:

Cultura Australia Plantation Project No. 2 is a plantation forestry project located across multiple shires in the South West region of Western Australia, including Augusta-Margaret River, Busselton, Nannup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes, and Manjimup. Registered in June 2025, the project initially covered 2,044.92 hectares before an October 2025 variation added further land to the project area.

Operating under the Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry 2022 methodology, the project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested land. Standard requirements typically involve demonstrating that the land was at risk of conversion (such as reverting to agriculture) and ensuring the continued growth and management of the plantation to lock in carbon, often by transitioning short-rotation crops (like woodchips) to long-rotation timber.

The South West region of Western Australia is heavily defined by its native forest management and commercial timber industry, alongside beef grazing and dairy farming. The environment experiences a Mediterranean climate with high annual rainfall, making it ideal for rapid tree growth. Soils in these forestry areas are typically well-drained lateritic gravels and karri loams.

The project proponent, Cultura Australia Pty Ltd, has engaged Delta Forestry (represented by Glen Samsa) as the local project manager. Cultura Australia is an investment group actively expanding the national softwood estate, specifically utilizing species such as Pinus radiata. Interestingly, the company is a recognized recipient of over $1 million in Australian Government funding under the "Support Plantation Establishment" program, aligning their carbon sequestration efforts with a wider goal to supply critical timber products to domestic markets.
