Rainmore Soil Carbon Project

ERF202588

Project Information:

The Rainmore Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located at Rainmore Station, approximately 90km south of Alpha in Central Queensland. Registered in September 2025, the project covers a substantial area of 10,904 hectares. The property acts as a backgrounding and fattening block for the Lethbridge family's cattle operations, complementing their breeding property, Werrington, located further north.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires landholders to establish a baseline of soil carbon through physical sampling and then implement new management activities to sequester additional carbon. The specific activities involved in this project include the introduction of legume species, such as Desmanthus and Stylo, into existing Buffel grass pastures, alongside changes to grazing intensity and duration to improve soil health.

The Alpha region falls within the Brigalow Belt bioregion, characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Rainmore Station typically receives an average annual rainfall of approximately 525mm. The landscape consists of open eucalypt woodlands and cleared Brigalow scrub, with soils that are predominantly fertile clays and loams capable of sustaining improved pasture systems.

An interesting note is that the proponent, Russell Lethbridge, is a prominent figure in the Australian beef industry and a director of Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA). The Lethbridge family has a long history of regenerative agriculture, having worked closely with Resource Consulting Services (RCS) and the project facilitator, Carbon Link, for many years to implement sustainable grazing strategies.
