Gillard Carbon Project 2

Gillard Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Mid North region of South Australia, approximately 30km southeast of Jamestown and 40km north of Burra. Registered in March 2025, the project covers 219 hectares of agricultural land. The surrounding region is situated near the transition zone between reliable cropping land and pastoral rangelands, often characterized by mixed farming operations with a heavy focus on grazing due to the variable climate.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for measured increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from changes in land management. For this specific project, the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, is working with the landholder to build soil health by re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures and altering stocking rates. By optimizing grazing duration and intensity, the project aims to increase ground cover and root biomass, which in turn sequesters atmospheric carbon into the soil.

Environmentally, the site lies within a semi-arid zone, receiving lower rainfall than the more coastal southern areas of the state, typically averaging between 250mm and 350mm annually. The landscape is likely defined by the Peterborough or similar land systems, featuring calcareous soils, shallow stony loams, and red clays. These soil types, while often inherently low in fertility and fragile, possess significant potential for carbon uplift when managed regeneratively to retain moisture and organic matter.
