Project Information:

AA2025R_WoodsdaleHP_S3 is a plantation forestry project located in Woodsdale, approximately 85km north of Hobart in the Southern Midlands region of Tasmania. Registered on March 27, 2025, the project initially covered an area of 85.92 hectares. In September 2025, an official variation was approved to add additional land areas to the project boundary.

Projects operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022 generate carbon credits through establishing new timber plantations, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. This specific project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest to non-forested land, ensuring it remains as a continuing commercial plantation.

The Woodsdale area and the broader Southern Midlands are traditionally known for sheep grazing and grain cropping, alongside extensive commercial forestry operations. The local environment typically experiences moderate rainfall, and the region features fertile soils with profiles highly suitable for productive softwood (such as Pinus radiata) and hardwood timber plantations.

The on-ground land management activities for the project are overseen by SFM Environmental Solutions, while the project proponent is The Trust Company (Australia) Limited acting as the trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust. This Sub-Trust is notably involved in the regional ActivAcre program, which seeks to integrate carbon-first forestry into Tasmanian agricultural landscapes by converting partially reverted agricultural lands back into productive, long-rotation forestry. Furthermore, the Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust has been recognized as a successful recipient of federal funding through the Support Plantation Establishment program to assist with the costs of preparing sites and establishing new forestry assets.
