Wambo Mine Waste Gas Electricity Generation Project - South Wambo
ERF201537
Project Information:
Wambo Mine Waste Gas Electricity Generation Project - South Wambo is an Industrial Fugitives project located at the Wambo Coal Mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Situated approximately 15km west of Singleton near the locality of Warkworth, the project operates within the mine's lease area. Registered in March 2025, the project focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal mining operations.
The project operates under the Coal Mine Waste Gas (CMWG) methodology. This involves the installation and operation of electricity production devices designed to capture fugitive methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere during mining. The captured gas is combusted to generate electricity, which is then used to displace electricity that would otherwise be drawn from the grid, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of the operation.
The surrounding Hunter Valley region is a significant hub for both mining and agriculture, characterized by cattle grazing, dairying, and viticulture. The environment is classified as warm temperate with a variable annual rainfall of approximately 600mm to 700mm. The local landscape features a mix of soil types, predominantly duplex soils (texture contrast soils) and sandy loams, including the distinct aeolian sands found in the Warkworth area.
The project proponent, EDL Holdings, is a major player in the sustainable energy sector, managing a portfolio of waste coal mine gas power stations across Australia. The Wambo Mine itself is a joint venture, historically involving major entities like Peabody Energy and Glencore, and includes both open-cut and underground operations.
