Phils River Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Phils River Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 22km north of Crookwell in the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales. Registered in March 2025, the project covers a land area of roughly 644 hectares. The surrounding region is renowned for its cool temperate climate and reliable rainfall, supporting extensive grazing industries, particularly fine wool and cattle, as well as seed potato production.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires the project proponent to demonstrate an increase in soil organic carbon stocks over time compared to a baseline. To achieve this, the project has implemented specific management activities including the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to correct nutrient deficiencies. Additionally, the project aims to improve soil health and vegetation cover by altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing operations.

The project is managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, a proponent that has been active in the sector since 2020. The soils in the Crookwell district generally consist of basalts and granites, which are responsive to nutrient management and improved grazing pressure, making them suitable candidates for soil carbon sequestration efforts.
