Jandowae Landfill Gas Project

ERF201449

Project Information:

The Jandowae Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas recovery operation located at the Jandowae Waste Management Facility on Winfields Road, approximately 50km north of Dalby in the Western Downs region of Queensland. Registered on April 16, 2025, the project serves the Jandowae community, a rural hub situated in an area primarily defined by agriculture, including broadacre cropping and grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology involves the installation of a gas collection system to capture methane generated by the decomposition of legacy and non-legacy waste. While the method allows for electricity generation, the project currently focuses on capturing and combusting the gas through a flaring system to convert methane into carbon dioxide, thereby significantly reducing the greenhouse gas potential of the emissions.

Environmental conditions in the Western Downs are characterized by a semi-arid to subtropical climate with variable rainfall, averaging between 600mm and 800mm annually. The region is dominated by Vertosols, or cracking clay soils, which are fertile but prone to significant shrinking and swelling.

Developed by LGI Limited in partnership with the Western Downs Regional Council, the project was established to manage biogas at no cost to the Council. Reports indicate the system includes a customised collection network and an LGI500 biogas flare. By late 2025, the project had successfully commenced gas flows, contributing to the proponent's portfolio of regional abatement sites.
