Jandowae Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:

The Jandowae Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas electricity generation project located at the Jandowae Landfill, approximately 4 kilometers northwest of the township of Jandowae in Queensland's Western Downs region. The project was registered in April 2025 and is operated by LGI Limited, a company specializing in biogas capture and renewable energy generation.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards project proponents for installing systems that capture methane emitted from decomposing waste, gas that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, and combusting it to generate electricity. By converting the methane into carbon dioxide and displacing fossil-fuel-generated power from the grid, the project achieves a dual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The Jandowae area is situated within the fertile Darling Downs, a region heavily utilized for intensive agriculture, including beef cattle grazing, dairying, and grain cropping. The local environment is characterized by a sub-tropical to semi-arid climate with moderate rainfall. The region is renowned for its Vertosols, deep, cracking black clay soils that are highly fertile and capable of retaining significant moisture, supporting the area's robust agricultural output.

A key feature of this project is the installation of a new landfill gas collection system designed to manage gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste. LGI Limited secured the contract for the site in late 2024, aiming to bring the facility online in the first half of 2025 to create Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and renewable energy.
