Project Information:

AA2025R_OuseP_S1 is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 2km southwest of the township of Ouse in the Central Highlands of Tasmania. The project was registered on December 20, 2024, and covers an area of roughly 234 hectares. The Ouse region, situated within the Derwent Valley, is traditionally a mixed-farming district known for sheep and cattle grazing as well as forestry operations.

Unlike "Environmental Planting" projects which establish permanent forest cover, the Plantation Forestry methodology allows for the commercial harvesting of timber. This project operates under the 2022 determination, which credits the carbon stored in the trees during their growth cycle as well as the long-term storage of carbon in wood products after harvest. The project specifically involves the establishment of a new plantation on land that was previously used for other agricultural purposes (likely grazing), creating a new carbon sink while contributing to future timber supply.

The local environment in Ouse differs from the wet western coast of Tasmania; it sits in a rain shadow area with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 500mm to 600mm. The soils in the Derwent Valley are often variable, ranging from alluvial soils near the river to clay loams derived from dolerite or basalt in the surrounding hills.

A notable aspect of this project is its proponent structure. The "Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust" has been identified in government records as a recipient of the "Support Plantation Establishment" grant, a federal program designed to expand Australia's future timber estate. The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a Tasmanian-based certified forest manager, likely under their "ActivAcre" program which partners with landowners to integrate timber crops into existing farming operations.
