Lakes Entrance Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:
Lakes Entrance Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas project located at the Lakes Entrance Landfill site on Thorpes Lane, approximately 5km north-west of the coastal town of Lakes Entrance in Victoria. The project was registered in February 2025 and is managed by the East Gippsland Shire Council. While the site itself has transitioned to functioning primarily as a transfer station, this project is designed to manage the emissions from the waste mass already in place.
Landfill gas projects involve the installation of a system of wells and pipes to capture methane generated by decomposing organic waste. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015, this captured gas is combusted, typically via flaring or electricity generation, to convert the potent methane into less harmful carbon dioxide. This specific project involves the installation of a new collection system to target gas from both legacy and non-legacy waste.
The East Gippsland region surrounding the project is characterized by a temperate coastal climate with moderate rainfall of approximately 700mm annually. The area is heavily defined by its coastal geography, featuring sandy soils and a mix of land uses including tourism, fishing, forestry, and grazing. The landfill site sits slightly inland from the Gippsland Lakes system, a vast network of inland waterways.
An interesting aspect of this project is its operation within a site that has recently shifted its primary function; the Lakes Entrance facility transitioned to a transfer station around 2021-2022. The project is supported by Dylan Nichols, who appears to be associated with EcoEnergy Ventures, a company specializing in waste-to-energy developments. This initiative aligns with the Council's broader waste management strategy to manage legacy emissions while serving the community's current disposal needs.
