Mountain Wanderrie

Project Information:

Mountain Wanderrie is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Barcaldine Regional Council area of Central Queensland. Situated approximately 60 kilometers southeast of the township of Barcaldine and west of Jericho, the project covers 1,235 hectares of agricultural land. It was registered on March 3, 2025, by NatureBase Pty Ltd.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This method allows land managers to earn carbon credits by increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Specifically, the Mountain Wanderrie project aims to sequester carbon by altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. By optimizing grazing pressure, often through time-controlled or rotational grazing, the project seeks to enhance vegetation cover and soil health, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

The Barcaldine region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450–500mm, predominantly falling in summer. While the broader region is known for its Mitchell grass downs and cracking clay soils, the project name "Mountain Wanderrie" suggests the presence of distinct landscape features. Mountain Wanderrie (Eriachne mucronata) is a native tussock grass often found on rocky hillslopes, sandstone ridges, or red sandy loams, indicating the project area likely contains lighter or skeletal soils typical of the upland areas near the Great Dividing Range, which runs nearby. The land use in this area is almost exclusively cattle and sheep grazing.
