Bellview and Pitlochry Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Bellview and Pitlochry Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 35km east of Inverell in NSW. It was registered in December 2024 and covers 1,163.45ha.
Soil carbon projects under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology involve introducing new, eligible agricultural management activities to build organic carbon in the soil, which is quantified through physical soil sampling and modeled estimates.
The Inverell area is a major agricultural centre known for broadacre farming, predominantly beef cattle and sheep grazing, as well as cropping. The area generally experiences a summer-dominant rainfall pattern and the soils are highly fertile, primarily consisting of Vertosols (cracking black clays) and Dermosols (chocolate soils) derived from basalt.
This project increases carbon in the agricultural soil system by altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover. Additional activities include applying gypsum to remediate sodic or magnesic soils, and establishing and permanently maintaining pasture on previous cropland or fallow. In August 2025, a project area variation was processed, which removed certain areas from the initial project boundaries.
